At long last, with the introduction of the new Eee PC 1008HA, or Seashell, as Asus have lovingly termed it, it seems that Asus have finally hired a decent marketing department, to go along with their technical nous.

Just look at the sidebar on the right (or for a real delight see the Wikipedia specifications page) and you will see a host of cryptic model numbers that give absolutely no indication over the capabilities or intended use of these machines.

I’ve argued previously about the need for Asus to consolidate the seemingly never ending tirade of model numbers into meaningful brands, and the Seashell is a step in the right direction. Hallelujah!

It’s been a busy few months in the world of the Eee PC with a seemingly endless number of Eee PC models being announced every day.

Surely Asus has to be careful with the amount of Eee PC models on the market to avoid overwhelming prospective customers, especially as there’s no clear delineation between each model and its target audience.

Perhaps a simpler ‘Home’ and ‘Professional’ type branding would be advisable, a la Apple and its Macbook / Macbook Pro distinction?

Anyway, I’ve updated the list of models currently available in the UK in the Eee PC Models guide, together with the specifications cheapest price for each.

Hopefully it will help you make a decision on which Eee PC is right for you, but if you’re confused don’t worry – just join the club!

Henk van de Goor might have turned to the dark side and installed Windows XP on his brand new Eee PC (heh) but he has redeemed himself by offering a great set of free wallpapers from his personal web album.

These are best suited to the screen resolution of the Eee PC 900, but you may find them useful even if you are using a different model

RegHardware reports that Asus had an amazing financial quarter in Europe, doubling its market share thanks to the Eee PC.

Do you think that Asus will continue to dominate in Europe, especially with rivals such as the Acer One and MSI Wind PC making inroads?

Certainly interesting times in the UMPC market. Whatever happens, Asus will be remembered for pioneering cheap Linux notebooks into a commercial success.
